Digital lending problems: a guide to tracing account issues
Digital lending problems can be traced through disclosures, refinance records, decision notices, payment ledgers, balances, and downstream account data.
What to take away
- Rebuild price from disclosures and cash flows when the app emphasizes only speed or payment size.
- A refinance can lower today's payment while increasing cumulative cost and restoring principal.
- An automated decision still needs records that identify the real inputs and reasons.
- Servicing errors require a transaction ledger, not screenshots alone.
- Diagnose marketing, underwriting, contract, payment, servicing, and reporting as separate layers.
Digital lending problems often cross company boundaries. The ad may come from a lead generator, the contract from a lender, the decision from a model, the debit from a processor, and the statement from a servicer.
Start by naming the layer where the evidence first diverges.
Problem 1: the price is hard to see
Common patterns include:
True Cost of Credit
- Net proceeds received
- Scheduled payments
- Required separate charges
- Total cash outflow
- a slider leads with payment and hides term;
- a fee is withheld from proceeds but the face amount remains prominent;
- a subscription sits outside the loan screen;
- a voluntary tip is preselected or socially pressured;
- a variable rate appears without a payment example;
- the cost is spread across interest, access, expedited funding, and failed-payment charges;
- an ad uses an example unavailable to the applicant.
Diagnose it
Collect the ad, offer, final disclosure, contract, funding record, and first statement. Build:
Net proceeds -> scheduled payments -> required separate charges -> total cash outflow
Compare the disclosed APR and finance charge with the contract and payment schedule. Do not create a substitute APR and label it as the lender's legal disclosure.
For covered consumer credit, the Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and Regulation Z govern cost disclosures, including the APR and finance charge. Compare those disclosures with the contract and payment schedule, and check whether required cost information is missing or inconsistent.
Repair it
Present lender, proceeds, APR, finance charge, term, payment schedule, total, and fees together before acceptance. Remove default selections for optional charges and disclose any effect of refusing them.
Problem 2: refinancing does not reduce debt
A borrower reaches the due date and receives a one-tap extension or replacement. The new loan pays the old balance, adds a fee, and provides little or no new cash.
Refinance Chain Tracker
- Cycle 1Old payoff, new cash, new fee, new principal
- Cycle 2Old payoff, new cash, new fee, new principal
- Cycle 3Old payoff, new cash, new fee, new principal
- CumulativeTotal cash paid across all cycles
Track a chain:
| Cycle | Old payoff | New cash | New fee | New principal | Cumulative cash paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | |||||
| 2 | |||||
| 3 |
The CFPB's explanation of payday loan renewals and rollovers says a rollover fee delays the due date without reducing principal and notes that state law may limit or ban the practice. Apply that description only when it matches the product and jurisdiction.
State rules vary by product and jurisdiction. Use NMLS Consumer Access to check a lender’s licensing information, then verify requirements or file a complaint with the relevant state lending regulator; a listing alone does not establish that a particular loan complies with state law.
Diagnose it
Obtain every contract, payoff, funding record, and payment. Separate new money from refinanced balance. Calculate cumulative fees and interest from the first agreement.
Repair it
Show the full chain before renewal, including new cash, new principal, total already paid, and the next zero-debt date. A hardship plan or other option may exist, but it must be evaluated on its own terms.
Problem 3: the automated denial is vague
Examples include:
Adverse Action Evidence
- Application and source data
- Retrieval time and feature values
- Policy and model version
- Score and overrides
- Decision and notice
- Reason matches a principal factor
- "did not meet internal criteria";
- "model score too low";
- a generic reason unrelated to the principal factor;
- an input category that cannot be traced to source data;
- a notice generated from the nearest template code;
- a fraud-screen failure described as creditworthiness.
Diagnose it
Preserve the application, source data, retrieval time, feature values, policy version, model version, score, overrides, decision, and notice. Confirm that the notice reason matches a factor used in the decision and that it is a principal reason.
The CFPB's complex-algorithm adverse-action circular states that creditors subject to ECOA and Regulation B must give specific principal reasons and cannot rely on model complexity as a defense for failing to identify them.
Repair it
Fix the reason-generation system, not only the sentence. A model that cannot produce faithful reasons may be unsuitable for a decision that requires them. Give the applicant a route to correct inaccurate source information.
Problem 4: a payment is applied incorrectly
Patterns include:
Payment Ledger Fields
- Transaction time and effective date
- Amount and method
- Processor ID and bank reference
- Servicer receipt and application order
- Principal, interest, fee, closing balance
- timely payment posted late;
- payment applied to the wrong account;
- extra amount advances the due date instead of reducing principal;
- partial payment held without clear status;
- fee assessed before a promised grace period ends;
- debit retried after a successful alternative payment;
- reversal posted without restoring the correct balance.
Diagnose it
Build a ledger with transaction time, effective date, amount, method, processor ID, bank reference, servicer receipt, application order, principal, interest, fee, and closing balance.
If the disputed payment is an electronic fund transfer covered by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) and Regulation E, use the error-resolution process for the account from which the money was debited. Notify the bank or credit union through its designated error-reporting channel, identify the transaction, and keep a copy; Regulation E sets notice and investigation requirements and timelines, subject to the transaction and coverage.
Repair it
Post or reapply the payment with the correct effective date, reverse dependent fees, recalculate balances, correct reporting, and send a revised statement. Keep the original transaction trail.
Problem 5: the app balance and payoff disagree
The dashboard may show principal while the payoff includes accrued interest or permitted charges through a later date. It may also show stale data.
Balance vs Payoff Labels
Dashboard amount
- Unpaid principal
- Shown
- Accrued interest
- Often omitted
- Assessed fees

- Unapplied funds
- May show
- Good-through date
- Not shown
Payoff amount
- Unpaid principal

- Accrued interest
- Included
- Assessed fees

- Unapplied funds
- May show
- Good-through date
- Required
Diagnose it
Label each amount:
- unpaid principal;
- accrued interest;
- assessed fees;
- unapplied funds;
- current amount due;
- past-due amount;
- payoff amount and good-through date.
Do not call two properly labeled amounts contradictory merely because they differ. Investigate when the same label and timestamp produce different values.
Repair it
Display definitions and timestamps. Give the borrower a written payoff route and reconcile it to the account ledger.
Problem 6: account data is wrong downstream
A servicing error can reach statements, collections, credit reporting, eligibility decisions, and customer messages. Fixing the app tile alone leaves the harm in place.
Diagnose it
Search by account, transaction, rule version, and affected reporting cycle. Identify every downstream recipient and decision.
Repair it
Correct source and derived records, notify recipients where required, reassess affected decisions, and confirm the consumer-facing result. Document what changed and what did not.
If incorrect loan information appears on a consumer report, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) provides a dispute process. Send a specific dispute with supporting records to the consumer reporting agency that issued the report; you can also dispute with the information furnisher. Keep copies and track the responses, since the FCRA sets investigation duties for consumer reporting agencies and furnishers.
If a debt collector is involved, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) may apply; it generally covers debt collectors, not a creditor collecting its own debt. For covered companies and services, the Consumer Financial Protection Act, part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, gives the CFPB authority over unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices (UDAAP). Applicability depends on the company, conduct, and transaction.
For an unresolved consumer-finance issue, submit a complaint through the CFPB’s consumer complaint portal and keep the submission and responses with the incident record. For licensing or state-law concerns, check NMLS Consumer Access and confirm the correct filing route with the state lending regulator.

Close the case only after the account ledger, consumer communication, and downstream corrections agree.
Common questions
Does a lower refinance payment mean lower cost?
No. Compare new cash, new principal, added cost, term, and cumulative payments from the first loan.
Can a lender say only that its model rejected me?
For decisions subject to ECOA and Regulation B, the creditor must provide the required specific reasons.
Is a payoff the same as principal balance?
Not always. A payoff may include accrued interest or other permitted amounts through a stated date.
Should an app screenshot settle a payment dispute?
No. Trace the bank, processor, servicer, application, and statement records.
